Social dancing is a great way to connect with others through musicality and dance. It’s also an opportunity to take everything you’ve learned and apply it to the dance floor. If you’re ready to hit the dance floor but not sure what to expect or what to do, below are tips to help you feel more confident and enjoy your evening.
What Happens?
If you’re new to social dancing, particularly Latin dancing, below is typically how it works:
- The lead, or even the follow, asks for a dance.
- If accepted the couple walks onto the dance floor.
- Ideally the couple dances for the duration of the song.
- Once the song ends, the dancers exchange a “thank you”, and leave the dance floor.
- Then repeat several times
Remember the dance floor is for dancing. Socializing and observers are typically standing on the perimeter of the dance floor.
Be Open & Switch Partners
During social dancing, most dancers switch partners for each song. This is a great way to dance with different skilled dancers, make connections, and learn something new. This could be a new concept for some and a bit overwhelming. So, what should you do?
- If you see someone you know, from dance class or previous socials, feel free to ask them to dance.
- Remember most people there have the same goal, to dance and have a great time.
- Don’t focus on perfection but have fun and connect with your partner.
Be Respectful
Social dancing is a lot of fun and it’s also very important for dancers to be respectful. Below are etiquette tips for the dance floor:
- Respect each other’s personal space. Not everyone you dance with will want to dance very close. Pay attention to your partner and be respectful.
- It’s a nice touch to walk your partner on and off the dance floor. Be mindful not to grab or pull anyone. Let’s be kind.
- Saying thank you after the dance has ended is a nice personal touch. It keeps the mood positive and who knows you may end up dancing with them again!
Connection is Key
It’s always amazing to see dancers who connect with the music and their dance partners. Trying out new styling and tricks is great too, but not at the expense of the connection or safety of your partner. Be mindful not to lose connection or even worse, hurt your partner.
Be Comfortable
I’m an advocate of wearing clothing that makes you feel great. If you plan on dancing all night, I suggest wearing what makes you feel fabulous and comfortable. Wear clothing that allows you to dance and shoes that provide support if you plan on dancing all night!
For heel wearers, if you can dance in high heels all night in, wear them! If not lower heels or flat shoes work too!
Conclusion
Overall social dancing is about more than just mastering steps—it’s about creating connections, building confidence, and having fun. With these tips, you’ll be ready to hit the dance floor with a smile, embrace the rhythm, and enjoy the incredible sense of community that comes with social dancing.
Happy Dancing!
